Yonemitsu Shinise
米満老舗
At Yonemitsu Shinise, a traditional sweets shop on Sanjo-dori near Aburanokoji, enjoy mitarashi dango with sweet-and-savoury sauce and kinako, warabi mochi and seasonal chestnut mochi—all made for taking away.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Yonemitsu Shinise’s mitarashi dango pairs small dumplings coated in a sweet-and-savoury sauce with a generous serving of kinako, or roasted soybean flour. The sauce and kinako offer contrasting flavours, making these an easy choice when you want something extra for a snack. One customer bought 3 skewers and enjoyed them with ohagi, splitting the sweets between that day and the following day—one way to take home a selection of treats.
Warabi mochi is a favourite among customers who return for its traditional shape and flavour. One person who tried both the brown-sugar and white varieties said they remained soft after being chilled in the refrigerator, and enjoyed them with plenty of kinako. The smaller size may suit a first taste, while a larger one could be easier to share at home.
Seasonal sweets add another reason to browse. A customer described the chestnut mochi as containing smooth red bean paste and simmered chestnut inside the mochi; another noted how soft the mochi was. It may appeal to anyone stopping by for a chestnut sweet. Customers who bought strawberry daifuku and sakuramochi also praised their refined sweetness and reasonable prices, making them seasonal alternatives to more familiar mochi sweets.
Yonemitsu Shinise is a takeaway wagashi shop, suited to picking up sweets for a snack at home or during a walk rather than eating in. It is located at Hashihigashizume-cho, west of Sanjo-dori and Aburanokoji. The shop is closed on Tuesdays and open from 9 to 18 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
